Silence in the Trees

Write a poem about a traveler drawn down a narrow, fog laced path into a forest. Somewhere within, they come upon something waiting, something strange, intimate, and impossible to forget.

You may choose any point of view or poetic style. Let the discovery be something that haunts the traveler. It can be as long as you like.

Silence in the Trees

I did not go looking for him.

The morning put him there.

A tree I’d passed a hundred times had learned a new posture;

bowed, obedient,

bearing what it had been taught to bear.

He was quiet.

Shoes pointed nowhere.

Hands open like he’d been interrupted

Mid-prayer or mid-apology.

No crowd.

No rope story worth repeating.

Just bark pressed into skin and the slow, deliberate patience of gravity.

The birds did not sing protest.

They adjusted.

I stood long enough to feel

the old lesson trying to climb my throat:

this is how order explains itself.

This is how silence survives.

When I left, the tree remained

doing what it had always done,

holding what men leave behind

and calling it natural.

The Last Light Beside the Graves

A wide field stretches beneath a fading sky. The sun sinks slowly toward the horizon, washing the earth in gold. Nearby, beyond sight but not beyond presence, lies a graveyard.

Write a poem about standing between endings and continuations.

The speaker is alone in the field at sunset. The world feels peaceful, yet heavy with the knowledge that just beyond this open space lie the dead, names carved in stone, lives finished, stories buried beneath the soil.

My sonnet (you can write any type of poem you want):

The sun goes down across a vacant field,

its copper eye half buried in the trees.

Light spreads in strips the thinning day can yield,

a final ledger kept among the leaves.

Beyond the grass lie rows of measured stone,

each name a century folded into lime.

No voice survives the body’s overthrow,

yet earth keeps count of every ruined time.

I stand where day loosens its burning thread,

the sky still bright with what it cannot keep.

The field extends like memory of the dead,

wide, stubborn, deeper than the reach of sleep.

The sun is almost gone. Still something stains the air,

as if the world remembers who was there.

The Many Faces of Rebirth

The first day of spring 2026 is on Friday, March 20, 2026, at 10:46 a.m. EDT. For those of us in the Northern Hemisphere, this is marked by the arrival of the spring equinox (otherwise known as the “First Point of Aries”).

Spring doesn’t only arrive in gardens. It arrives in second chances, in forgiven words, in the courage to begin again. Spring is the season of renewal.

Yes, we’ll notice the sprouts pushing through thawing ground and the returning birds. But poetically let’s notice a friendship we’re gently rebuilding, an old habit we’re finally releasing, a dream we’re daring to try, or maybe a version of ourselves we’re ready to become

Spring is the season of becoming. What is becoming in you? What is sprouting inside of you?

Before you start to write, really pay attention, take inventory of yourself. Be honest, go deep inside.

Sit quietly for five minutes or longer, whatever feels right, with these questions. Write down whatever comes. Words, images, fragments. Don’t censor yourself. Don’t pay attention to form, just flow with it.

What in you has felt dormant? What is now stirring?

What are you ready to release? What new quality are you trying to grow? Do you want patience, courage, persistence, softness?

Is there a connection you’d like to rekindle? Who in your life represents spring for you? Who helps you grow?

What conversation has been waiting for the right season?

What project has been waiting for you to start?

What would it mean to approach your work with green energy?

What ideas do you have? Can you act on them now?

The Writing Prompt

Path One: The Haiku Path (Traditional Form)

Write a traditional haiku (5-7-5 syllables) that captures a moment of personal or relational spring. Your kigo (seasonal word) doesn’t have to be natural, it can be an image that represents your inner season.

Example-

Dusting off my brush,

the painting I abandoned

blooms again at last.

Path Two: The Free Verse Path

Write a poem of any length exploring the theme “What is rebirthing in me right now?”

Consider these openings:

“What I thought was an ending was really...”

“This spring, I am growing...”

“The hardest bulb to plant was...”

“Forgiveness, like April rain, falls on...”

Path Three: The Inventory Poem

Create a poem in two columns or stanzas:

What Is Falling Away What Is Emerging

(like last year’s leaves) (like first green shoots)

Let the images speak to each other across the page.

Example - Free Verse

What I Released

The need to be small.

The apology before the sentence.

The belief that my voice

is something to be forgiven.

Path Four: A Cinquain

This is also known as a quintain or quintet, and as its names suggest, it has five lines. It can be an entire short poem or a stanza in a longer work. It was developed into the “American Cinquain” in the early 20th century by poet Adelaide Crapsey, who was inspired by the Japanese tanka poem (more about this shortly). Her revised version is unrhymed and has a set number of syllables per line: 2, 4, 6, 8, 2.

Tips for Your Writing

🌸Be specific. Not “I’m changing,” but “I’m learning to leave voicemails without rehearsing first.”

🌷Let the natural world mirror you. If you’re writing about a healing relationship, maybe a willow sending out new roots appears in your poem.

🌺Permission to be tender. Spring isn’t always gentle. It’s thunderstorms and mud and messy growth. Your poem can be messy too.

💐Notice what’s hard. Rebirth involves cracking open. What’s cracking in you?

Minor Infractions

Let’s get grounded, be human. Forget romance. Forget grand gestures. This week, we’re tuning into a different frequency and avoiding the trap of making self-reflection feel like a punishment. Let’s focus on the low vibrational hum of our own small, silly, and slightly shameful moments.

A poem talking about the times you were not your best self. Not in a tragic, life-ruining way, but in that quiet, human way we all experience.

Think of it as a poetic inventory of your minor infractions. The goal isn’t to wallow in guilt, but to observe with honesty and a touch of humor. Can you capture the truth of a small wrongdoing in a poem?

Write a poem about a time you fell short. Keep it simple. Keep it true. Keep it real.

Did you steal a pen? Eat the last cookie? Did you ever hold a grudge against someone for something they did in a dream you had about them? The injustice feels so real. Did you call in sick to work when you were perfectly healthy? Tell us about that glorious, guilt-ridden day of freedom.

The challenge isn’t just to confess, but to find the precise, honest detail. Don’t tell us you felt guilty. Show us the pen sitting in your pencil case, a different color from all the others. Show us the empty plate with a single crumb, the silence where a reply should be.

This isn’t a court of law. It’s a playground for the conscience. Make it fun, make it silly, but most of all, make it true.

In Living Color

You may find this prompt childish, as if I am asking you to play with crayons or chalks, but I’m not unless that is what inspires you. Last week we looked at light. What happens in the fracture of light? This week we’re looking for inspiration in colors. There is a little science to it. Colors have meanings, not only in a metaphorical sense but also can affect mood and cognition. Have you ever heard about therapists using color to help especially children describe emotion?

This week the prompt is to write about color.

Color is the world’s first language. Before we form words, we feel the calm of a blue sky, the warning flash of red, the quiet hope in a green leaf. It drapes our moods! Consider indigo melancholy or golden joy. Color also carries centuries of meaning: purple for royalty, white for peace, green for envy or renewal. But what can happen when we turn this silent sensory experience into poetry? How do we experience color differently? Today’s prompt invites you to explore the visible and invisible.

Inspiration comes from the visual sense. Questions to ask yourself. What is the first thing that comes to mind when you think of this color? What object, in its purest form, embodies it? When have you felt this color emotionally? What is its opposite, and where do they meet? If this color vanished from the world, what would be lost?

Think about what you feel when you see a certain color of fabric next to your skin? Your favorite flower, tree, or the ocean, the sky. What color makes you happy? What color makes you sad?

Let’s paint with words. Choose your color. It can be one you see vividly, one you remember, or one you feel in your bones. create. Try to create a vibrant tapestry with your words.

A Fracture of Light

I want you to consider a singular fraction of light, a slender intrusion of light into darkness. Focus on the precise instant it appears and the world it briefly alters.

A sliver of dawn through a curtain seam. A hallway spill when door cracks open at night. The final, sputtering spark of a candlewick. The defiant twinkle of one star through city haze. A reflection off a shattered glass. The gleam on a watch face in a dark room.

Don’t just describe the light. Write from within the experience of that moment. Capture the physics and the feeling. What does that fracture do? Does it cut, does it heal, does it reveal, does it accuse? What does it illuminate, an object, a memory, a face, a dust mote dancing like a galaxy? What was the darkness before, and how is it different after? Hold that fraction of a second, stretch it into your poem, and let it be the entire world.

Ideas to Consider

• Is the light an arrival or an invasion?

• What sound does this visual moment have? (A whisper, a tear, a ping, a sigh?)

• What does the illuminated thing become in this temporary spotlight? (A relic, a monument, a ghost?)

• Does the light promise something, or does it take something away with it when it’s gone?

Write

Write a poem focusing on the concept of the light, not only as a source, but as a space, a capacity, a physical feeling, a metaphysical experience between time and space. No rules or structure for this prompt. It’s about what you feel when you look into this light or look past it. What is this light?

A Lost Moment

Is a “Wasted Opportunity” just a story we tell ourselves? This week challenge is to write a poem that explores the idea that these moments. Hindsight.

Could the “other path” have been worse?

Is the beauty of the lost moment found precisely in its loss and the longing it creates?

The Privilege of the Pause:

Sometimes, we let a moment pass not out of fear, but out of wisdom, respect, or timing. Write a poem about an opportunity you consciously let go, and why it was the right choice, even if it still tingles with a sense of “what if.”

The Small Misses:

The “unasked question” or the “rehearsed conversation” almost always leads to a raw, human story.

We often fixate on big life choices.

What about the tiny, wasted moments that pile up?

The sunrise you slept through, the book you never started, the quiet evening you spent scrolling instead of connecting.

Collect a few of these “small misses.”

What do they have in common? Why did you miss them?

We all carry them, those quiet ghosts of chances not taken. They don’t haunt us with screams, but with a persistent, gentle whisper of ‘maybe.’

A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

We are visual creatures are we not? The senses are five of the greatest inspirations we can have as muses. This week poetry prompt is visual. Choose a picture, take a picture, or draw a picture that inspires a poem. What words does the picture whisper, shout, or hide?

One of my favorite styles of poetry I call Flower Poetry. I will take pictures of flowers or trees and then write a poem to them or about them. I have many examples on my main publication if you are interested. Nature can be very inspiring for me, especially because I feel peaceful, calm and grounded when I am out and about hunting flowers and trees.

Find, take, draw, or create a picture. Then, write the poem it holds inside. What does it say? Sounds corny I know, but have you tried it before? Did a lovely sunset inspire a love poem? Did a child riding a bike inspire a nostalgic poem? The possibilities are limitless. Did a picture of an ancient tombstone make you think like Poe?

• Literally what do you see? Colors, objects, light, shadows, figures. Start with simple descriptions.

• Emotionally, what’s the feeling? Melancholy, joy, peace, unease, nostalgia?

• Narrate what happened just before this moment? What will happen next? Who or what is just outside the frame?

• Metaphorically what is it? Is the image a memory, a secret, a wish, or a warning, what would it be?

• Give your picture a voice.

• Or focus obsessively on one tiny detail, then pan out to the wider story the picture tells.

• Maybe contradict it. Write about what the picture seems to show verses what you know or feel is truly there.

The pictures in this post were all inspirations for poems I have written.

Find your muse, find your picture…now tell its story in poetic form. No rules, no structure unless you want to. What does the picture say to you and what is it trying to say to those who read it? Please include the picture in your link or comment.

The Obscure Word

Have you ever come across a word in your reading, on a sign, on a note, on a billboard, in a shop…that caught your attention.

Maybe it wanted you to whisper it out loud, roll the syllables across your tongue. Maybe it brought back a memory or gave you a spark of creativity.

Maybe it was something that you read in an older text or manuscript, making you fascinated. Exploring not only what the word meant how it’s used, how it feels.

Choose an obscure word that sparks your imagination to shape a poem around it. Use free verse to describe a scene or a memory that the word evokes. Try using sensory details. Follow the chosen word. Let the imagery, revealing its meaning through the lens of your personal experience.

Sometimes a poem starts with the idea of just one word. What word is that for you?

Scheming Rhymes (I’m running out of breath and fading) In the Rain.

I came across this post by poet author of Scheming Rhymes, today. I was enthralled. This is a brilliant post. Not only was the poem gravitating, but the phenomenal prompt and call for spontaneous creation he created after. I know the subject is heavy, but his writing is exquisite. Lost Battle

If I fall

Echo

This week’s prompt starts with a word, “echo.” What has echoed in your life? Was it someone said? A memory? A lesson? A dream? An action? A yearning?

When we think of echoes, we think of vast caverns or low valleys that carry sound on the wind in vibration. Perhaps we think of Nietzsche, “And when you look into an abyss, the abyss also looks into you.” That feels like an echo of the soul. What poetic verse comes to mind when you think of an echo? Music to Inspire

Welcome poets! This week’s poetry prompt if you chose to use it, comes from music. Is there a line in a song that hits you just the right way and you are inspired? Is there a melody that takes you into a place you must write about? A chorus, maybe, you shout at the top of your lungs? Or a song that you feel was written specifically for you and your life?

Most poetry is not all rainbows and sunshine. Most poetry is a heart wrenching rendering of the soul. Music has the same effect.

Inventory of a Quiet Room

Create a poem that is an inventory of everything contributing to the peace in a specific room at a specific moment. Go beyond objects. Include the dust motes dancing in a sunbeam, the memory held by a faded photograph, the silence between ticks of a clock. How does the room make you feel? Is it nostalgic? Calm? End with the one thing you would add or remove in the room. No first line suggestions, just what you feel in this room when you stop and notice all the things in it or out of it. If words are too much try pictures instead. Whatever you feel called to.

The Antidote Is in the Room

Possible beginning lines: “It wasn’t a grand gesture, but...” “I did not know this corner existed,” “I felt his/hand right when I crumbled” “I found a room to hide in”

Possible beging words: dark, sunlight, window, chair, curtain, tea kettle, pillow, rage

Describe the simple, immediate thing that pierced a moment with a personal obstacle, or a moment when control was just a whisper.

What was it that brought you back to a safe grounded place?

A partner washing the dishes you left in the sink, a child offering you a cookie, the kettle whistling exactly when you needed it to, your cat nuzzled on your lap.

What sweet little kindness gave your day a special glow?

Remember the poetry does not have to be about the prompt. Does the prompt make you think of something else? What is it? How does it flow? What part of you did it come from?

No limitations on length or type of poetry whether you feel loose regulated verse, a scattering of words, a sonnet or a couplet. Write from a place of gentleness in your heart. If you don’t want to use the beginning line don’t! Follow your heart.
