Note from the editors:
White Rabbit Poetry Society takes a look into the modern poetic verse of Rap and Rap inspired poetry. Between 1970 to 1979 DJs and MCs in the Bronx began experimenting with spoken rhythmic vocals over extended breakbeats at block parties. This is widely recognized as the birth of rap. Then the first Rap single to be popular in American mainstream was released in 1979 but the SugarHill Gang. Tupak Shukur was one of America’s most brilliant modern-day poets. He attended Baltimore School for the Arts, where he studied poetry, acting, and ballet wining many contests and awards. Harvard’s Hip Hop Archive and scholars like Dr. Marcyliena Morgan describes rap as the “poetry of a generation.” We proudly introduce Vision2Verse one of our own Substack poets and creator of the “poetry of a generation!” Please take a few moments to visit Vision2Verse subscribe, listen to his music, read his poetry.
From a Vision to Verse
by Vision2Verse
I didn’t decide to write poetry so much as poetry became the language that survived when everything else failed.
Long before I thought of myself as a poet, I was trying to make sense of pressure, loss, ambition, identity, and the strange distance between who we are and who we pretend to be. Poetry gave me a way to document that excavation. It allowed me to take experiences that felt chaotic and transform them into something meaningful, something that could travel beyond my own life and connect with someone else’s.
Life & Work with Dondi Springer of Jacksonville, FL Interview
My work lives at the intersection of spoken word, literary poetry, rap lyricism, and personal testimony.
I am inspired by the architecture beneath human behavior, the stories people inherit, the masks they wear, the roles they perform, and the moments when those structures begin to crack. Much of my writing explores transformation through metaphor, often using imagery of fire, ash, infection, blue flames, and reconstruction.
Rap music has been one of my greatest influences because it represents poetry in motion.
The best lyricists compress philosophy, storytelling, rhythm, emotion, and social commentary into a form that can be felt as much as understood. To me, great rap is not separate from poetry, it is one of its most dynamic and culturally significant expressions.
Whether I am writing a poem, recording spoken word, or creating through the Vision 2 Verse and Napalmjax Protocol projects, the goal remains the same: to create work that doesn’t simply entertain, but leaves a mark. I want readers and listeners to recognize something of themselves in the transmission and walk away changed by the encounter.
